Train melee by choosing the next useful requirement, a target you can sustain and the correct attack style. Quest rewards can skip slow opening levels, Gemstone Crab supports low-interaction sessions, Sulphur Nagua reward multi-hit weapons, Scurrius teaches combat mechanics and Nightmare Zone offers a controlled longer session. Later, Hallowfell adds a strong multi-target option at grouped monsters.

This OSRS 1–99 melee guide covers Attack, Strength and Defence. It explains why the best method changes with your unlocks and attention. A training location is not automatically safe because its damage is low, and a high-level benchmark is not a guarantee for a fresh account.

These options overlap. You can keep using an affordable method after unlocking another, or switch for variety. Choose the method that fits the whole session rather than one you can maintain for only a few minutes.

Attack, Strength and Defence do different jobs

Attack contributes to melee accuracy and commonly gates weapons. Strength contributes to melee damage. Defence affects defensive capability and equipment access. The displayed combat level combines several skills; it is not a direct damage score.

Check the weapon's combat options before training. Accurate styles usually train Attack, aggressive styles Strength and defensive styles Defence. Controlled styles split experience across the three. Weapon-specific interfaces can vary, so inspect the selected option after every change.

A larger maximum hit can improve experience, but a single Strength level does not always cross a damage breakpoint. Accuracy matters more against high-defence targets than it does against a zero-defence training crab. Compare the actual target and complete equipment rather than treating one stat order as universal.

For a normal main, train enough Attack and Defence for the equipment you want, then prioritise Strength where it improves the chosen method. Restricted accounts must check quest rewards and controlled styles before committing; unwanted experience cannot simply be removed afterwards.

Quest rewards: skip slow levels without copying an unsafe route

Waterfall Quest gives 13,750 Attack and 13,750 Strength experience. It does not require defeating its high-level monsters, but it does require moving through dangerous areas. No formal combat requirement is not the same as a safe first quest with low Hitpoints.

Witch's House provides 6,325 Hitpoints experience and can be a useful earlier project when prepared for its encounters. Fight Arena, Tree Gnome Village and The Grand Tree add combat experience alongside useful progression, but each has its own combat and other requirements.

Choose one short quest chain, prepare the actual items and complete the reward dialogue. Then check your current experience before calculating the remaining training. A total copied from another player's route is only correct when your completed quests and reward choices match.

If training directly, fight manageable enemies with an affordable fast weapon, bring food and return to the bank before supplies run out. Save expensive target-specific equipment for the method you are actually about to use.

Build a complete weapon setup

Against ordinary low-defence targets, fast attacks often outperform a slow weapon with a larger single hit. Weapon effects and special target mechanics can change that comparison. Hallowfell's grouped damage and Nagua's flat-armour interaction are important examples.

Full set, weapon, durability and upkeep

A dragon scimitar requires Monkey Madness I and 60 Attack. An abyssal whip is a familiar later option, but its controlled style is not pure Strength training. Read the available styles instead of buying a weapon solely from a general damage ranking.

The Warriors' Guild is another equipment project: ordinary entry requires a combined Attack and Strength level of 130, or level 99 in either. Earning a defender and equipping it have their own steps and requirements. Reaching the guild entrance does not automatically award the finished off-hand.

Keep food, potions and recovery money after buying equipment. A modest complete setup you can keep using is more useful than a premium item that exhausts the supply budget.

Gemstone Crab: low interaction with a clear reset

The Gemstone Crab in the Tlati Rainforest requires Children of the Sun for Varlamore access. It has no defence and effectively unlimited Hitpoints, making it convenient for uninterrupted combat. It remains at a location for about ten minutes before burrowing elsewhere; use the nearby cave network to reach its new position.

Experience is reduced by 12.5% compared with ordinary damage: a usual four-XP melee damage point gives 3.5 instead. Reduced overkill and target downtime can still make the method useful. At very low damage levels, other crabs may remain competitive.

Use the intended attack style, keep auto-retaliate appropriate to the setup and check Hitpoints. The crab can deal small amounts of damage. Do not leave a character at almost no health because another player described the method as harmless.

It does not count toward Slayer tasks, so black-mask or Slayer-helmet task bonuses do not apply. The shell reward has contribution requirements; do not include a guaranteed gem payout for every visitor.

Sulphur Nagua: why multi-hit weapons help

Sulphur Nagua in Neypotzli require 48 Slayer and the relevant Perilous Moons progress. They have minus-four flat armour, adding damage to successful hits. Weapons that land multiple hits can exploit this interaction particularly well.

Sulphur blades and glacial temotli are useful options with 55 Attack. Later, dual macuahuitl require 70 Attack and 75 Strength. A main can compare tradeable weapon costs; an Ironman needs to plan acquisition rather than treating a shopping list as the whole route.

Bring a plan for Protect from Melee and Prayer restoration. Moonlight potions made within Neypotzli support restoration and melee boosts, but learn their preparation before arriving with no supplies. The creatures also have a special attack that can drain Prayer if you remain in range; monitor the bar rather than assuming protection stays active indefinitely.

Nagua are spectral rather than undead, so salve amulet bonuses do not apply. An ectoplasmator can add Prayer experience when its own conditions are met. Read the creature's actual attributes instead of choosing equipment by appearance.

Choose a position where suitable spawns remain available, check your damage and re-supply cycle, then compare a complete session with your crab route. Experience depends on the weapon, boosts, Strength, protection and time spent making supplies.

Scurrius: train combat skills and practical PvM together

Players fighting Scurrius in Varrock Sewers with summoned rats and falling rubble

Scurrius is reached through Varrock Sewers. The public group encounter and free private instance have different health and difficulty, so choose deliberately. A learner should not assume the public boss behaves like a solo version simply because both use the same name.

Bring food, Prayer restoration, a usable melee setup and a return route. Protect from Melee matters during the relevant close-range phases; later attacks require responding to Magic and Ranged cues. Falling-rubble shadows are a movement cue, not something a protection prayer automatically solves.

Learn the sequence: maintain the appropriate protection, move off a targeted rubble tile, deal with rat minions and resume damage without losing track of Prayer. Rat bone weapons make minion handling much faster, but the required spine comes from the boss and is not guaranteed on your first kill.

That reward dependency matters when comparing rates. An established bone-mace setup and a beginner obtaining their first spine are different training sessions. Measure the one you can actually perform.

Scurrius is useful when you want combat practice as well as levels. If repeated mistakes consume your supplies, focus on one cue at a time rather than trying to match an experienced player's rate immediately. Scurrius deaths are unsafe for Hardcore status or group lives. Ordinary accounts should know their grave location; UIMs must plan around their own item-recovery rules.

For the full first-kill walkthrough, use the Scurrius guide alongside this training comparison. For Neypotzli access and preparing local supplies, use the Perilous Moons guide before extending a Nagua session.

Nightmare Zone: prepare the dream and the first points

Nightmare Zone custom rumble interface for selecting eligible quest bosses

Nightmare Zone near Yanille requires a suitable roster from completed eligible quests. Completing any five unrelated quests is not enough. Check the unlocked bosses and the dream type before paying the fee.

A custom rumble lets you choose available bosses. For straightforward training, favour a manageable set without mechanics that repeatedly interrupt attacks, disable Prayer or demand special items. A roster designed for maximum reward points can differ from one designed for low-interaction experience.

New players have no stock of Nightmare Zone points for absorption or overload potions. Begin with a suitable protection-and-supply setup or another prepared first-point method. Earn enough to fund the next dream before assuming the long-session absorption routine is ready.

Absorption potions absorb damage using a separate point pool. Lower current Hitpoints can reduce the points lost per incoming hit, which is why experienced setups use a rock cake or locator orb. Learn the mechanics first; do not copy a one-Hitpoint routine without checking absorption and the chosen bosses.

Overloads require at least 51 current Hitpoints and deal damage over several seconds. Do not use an additional Hitpoints-reducing item while that damage is still occurring. Wait for the potion's damage sequence to finish before following a low-Hitpoints routine.

Check absorption, boosts, remaining supplies and continued attacking periodically. A long low-input interval is not a promise that the character can be left without checks for the entire dream. Normal and hard modes also differ in points, enemy stats and sustain.

Hardcore account check: Nightmare Zone deaths are safe for solo Hardcore Ironmen but cost a shared life for Hardcore Group Ironmen. HCGIM players should leave using the exit potion instead of dying to end a dream.

Hallowfell and maniacal monkeys: a later multi-target route

Hallowfell is a two-handed weapon requiring 75 Attack. It can hit the primary enemy and up to two additional unique targets around the player, with secondary maximum hits up to half the player's maximum. Each has its own accuracy roll.

This effect does not strike one large monster three times like a different multi-hit weapon might. You need eligible separate targets in the correct positions. Its six-tick attack speed also means it should not be compared with a fast single-target weapon by maximum hit alone.

Grouped maniacal monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon provide a useful training setting after the relevant Monkey Madness II progress. Prepare the weapon, a light source, Protect from Melee, Prayer supplies and return transport. Dropped potions help sustain the routine but do not replace initial supplies or monitoring.

Begin with a consistent grouping position and watch which targets the cleave reaches. Reposition when enemies spread or aggression needs resetting. Advanced setups add special attacks, high-level boosts and other unlocks; their peak rates are not the expectation for every newly eligible account.

Where Slayer and money-oriented training fit

Slayer combines combat experience with task progression and access to later monsters. Use a black mask or Slayer helmet where its task conditions apply, bring the required protection and respect any location restriction. A task's stronger boss alternative may serve a loot goal while slowing pure training.

Gargoyles and similar monsters can provide usable rewards, but need their own Slayer level, access and finishing equipment. Do not present a later money-oriented monster as a universal beginner training target.

For a main, compare earning money separately and funding faster training with a slower method that produces loot during combat. For an Ironman, useful resources may justify lower immediate experience. The correct answer depends on what the output unlocks for the account.

Rare drops assumed from somebody else's lucky session

For example, 40,000 experience in a complete half-hour session projects to 80,000 per hour at the same pace. Excluding resupplying or regrouping creates another figure. If a controlled style divides experience, check the skill you intended to train rather than counting the combined number as pure Strength.

Test one complete route, correct the largest repeated problem and then extend the session. For task preparation, use the Slayer guide. If you are unsure whether to train or buy equipment next, use our levels-versus-gear comparison.

If the planned method needs a quest or better travel, use the quest unlock guide and travel setup guide before buying another weapon. For protection-prayer access or a restoration target, check the Prayer guide and include its unlocks in the whole training project.
